Braden Collects Fifth Kil-Kare Win

 by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH - It was another amazing night of racing at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night as Travis Braden scored his fifth NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature. Mike Carroll took the $750 to win modified feature while Bill Ramey won the sport stock main. Matt Stone claimed the compact feature while USAC Ford Midget features went to Chris Lamb and Sam McGee.
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature saw heat winner Dick Dunlevy and Bob Sibila start in the front row with Dunlevy getting a slight lead over Don Mahaffey Jr. who was followed by Sam Heckman and Sibila with Justin Alsip right in the thick of action. The battle was for third between Heckman, Alsip and Braden while Dunlevy led Mahaffey. Alsip did steal third followed by Braden while Heckman dropped to fifth. Fast timer Braden was on a mission as he passed Alsip for third and then went to work closing the gap on the leaders.
Braden took second on lap twenty five and then closed in on leader Dunlevy and Dunlevy got blocked by a slower car as Braden stole the lead to claim his fifth feature of the year in the Weiler Welding special. Dunlevy was second with Mahaffey third. Justin Alsip was fourth and Bob Sibila fifth.
Ricky Bates and Sam Heckman were the front row starters in the first late model heat with Bates the leader and Dick Dunlevy chasing him. Dunlevy moved on the inside of Bates to take the lead as did fast timer Travis Braden who took second spot with Dunlevy taking hs first heat win of the year with Braden  second, Bates third, and Don Mahaffey fourth.
It was Russ Bobb and Tony Brunke leading the second heat to the green with Brunke out front as Bobby Justus shot on the inside of Bobb to take second. At the  checker it was Brunke taking his first heat win with Justus second trailed by Bobb and Justin Alsip.
Jessica Bean and Nick Davidson led the pack in the USAC Ford Focus Midget feature for their thirty laps of feature racing with the red flag displayed right after the green when numerous cars piled up on the backstretch which nocked three cars out of contention.  Chris Lamb and Nick Davidson were now in the front row to face the green. Lamb took the lead with Ross Rankin second and Nick Hamilton third. Hamilton took 0ver second with Rankin riding third and James Robertson fourth with Jaret Andretti fifth. The caution flew on lap fifteen for a spin. Hamilton tried to challenge Lamb for the lead but Lamb outpowered him as the laps ran down. Hamilton tried the outside but just could not pull off the move. Ross Rankin did snatch the win just barely beating Nick Hamilton and Nick Davidson who were a very close second and third. Fourth was James Robertson and Jaret Andretti was fifth.
Jessica Bean and Tyler Cottongim led the USAC Ford Focus Midget firt heat to the green with Cottongim taking the lead as the first four cars ran very close. Cottongim took the win with Chris Lamb second, Jessica Bean third, and Nick Davidson fourth.
Tyler Shullick jumped out front in the second heat with James Robertson running second and Jaret Andretti third. When the checker waved it was Shullick the winner followed by Andretti and Davidson.
It was a two car challenge in the young guns feature between Sam McGee and Steve Kuhn with McGee leading all the way to take the win with Kuhn second.
The modifieds had forty laps to go with $750 going to the feature winner and it was Mike Carroll and Greg Stapleton in the front row, both former feature winners. Carroll took the lead with Stapleton and Kyle Jones side by side as they went three wide on turn four with Jones coming out the leader and here came the caution as several cars spun on turn four. Reverting back to the last completed lap this put Carroll back front followed by Jones, Stapleton, Derek Weatherhead and Shane Shirk.
Jones continued to dog Carroll with Ryan Fleming now in fifth having passed Shirk. Jones was almost glued to Carroll's bumper as he tried to figure a way around and then Weatherhead tried the inside of Jones as they ran side by side. With Stapleton still fourth and Fleming fifth at the halfway mark. Weatherhead did take over second as Carroll continued to lead the field. Just after the ten laps to go signal Weatherhead tried Carroll but Carroll shook him and stayed in command. When the checker waved it was Carroll and his McDonalds special taking his second win of the year. Derek Weatherhead was a very close second with Kyle Jones not far behind in th with Greg Stapleton fourth and Ryan Fleming fifth.
Caleb Reschar and Shane Shirk were the first row starters in the first modified heat with Reschar taking the lead with a three car battle for second between Mike Carroll, Kyle Jones and Shane Shirk with Carroll taking the second spot with Jones right behind. Reschar took the win, his second of the year with Carroll second, Jones third, and Shirk fourth.
Rob Dutra and Grant Gamble found themselves in the front row of the second modified heat  with the two running side by side with Jerry Stapleton finding a hole and snatching the lead with Ryan Fleming challenging Dutra for second. Fleming took over second and when the checker waved it was Stapleton taking his first heat win of the year with Ryan Fleming second, Rob Dutra third and John Donovan fourth.
It was twenty five laps to go in the sport stock main with Bill Ramey and Ray Muncy in the front row as Muncy took command followed by fast timer Travis Digges with Ramey third being challenged by three time winner Shawn Stansell. Unfortunately the two front runners, Muncy and Digges tangled on the backstretch with Digges sent to the tail and Muncy back in front. Muncy continued to set sail as Stansell was after second place running Ramey. Behind them it was Mike South Jr., Josh Longstreth, and Rodney Roush battling for fourth. South and the two behind him was closing the gap on the leaders when Longstreth spun on turn two and was sent to the tail.
Just after the restart Travis Digges and Duane Bohrer tangled going into turn one with Digges sidelined. Muncy was still in command on the restart with second place running Stansell trying to get around Ramey while Rodney Roush was being challenged by Courtney Hannah for fourth. Muncy weeded his way around slower cars and here came Stansell on the outside to take second from Ramey as he moved up on leader Muncy but all of a sudden Stansell spun on the frontstretch. Stansell was sent to the rear and Ramey back in second with the running order now Muncy, Ramey, Roush, Hannah and Tyer Mahaffey. With two laps to go and Muncy with win in sight he blew a tire giving the win  to Ramey with Rodney Roush second and Courtney Hannah having her best finish in third. Fourth was Tyler Mahaffey and fifth Mike South Jr.
Josh Longstreth and Duane Bohrer made up the front row of the first heat of sport stocks. Longstreth had the lead but on his bumper was fast timer Travis Digges with Ray Muncy running third and Bill Ramey fourth. At the checker it was Longstreth claiming his first heat win of the year with Digges second followed by Muncy and Ramey.
The second heat saw Nick Nunamaker and Josh Cahill face the green first. Cahill took the lead but here came Ricky Young and Rodney Roush to try for the lead and Roush did so on lap three. Tyler Mahaffey then moved up to challenge for third when the caution came out when Young spun. Rodney Roush held the front spot to claim his first heat of the year with Josh Cahill, Ricky Young, and Courtney Hannah fourth.
Heading the field in the twenty lap compact feature was Gary Williams and five time feature winner Bo Hoelscher with Hoelscher taking the lead but the caution came out when Paul Holley stalled on the backstretch. When the green came back out it was Williams out front with Hoelscer second and fast timer and new track record holder Matt Stone on the move. Stone nudged inside of Williams for the lead on lap four with second fast timer Bryan Lynch moving into third. Hoelscher latched on to third place as Williams dropped to fourth and Ryan Tamburo riding fifth.
Stone held the lead as Lynch was closing in on the leader and when the checker waved it was Stone of Pleasant Hill taking his fourth compact  feature win in his Glassman special. Lynch was a very close second with Hoelscher third followed by Gary Williams and Dustin Smith.
Dustin Smith and Ryan Tamburo led the field to the green in the first compact heat race with Bo Hoelscher charging at the green to take the lead with Gary Williams running second and Bryan Lynch moving into third as he challenged Williams for second. Lynch made an inside pass good to place second to Hoelscher won took the win with Williams third and Dustin Smith fourth.
Steve Barnhart and Ron Sagers were the front row starters in the second compact heat. Sagers took the early lead with Barnhart and Davey Shaw in tow but Barnhart went up in a puff of smoke and departed. Sager had little trouble in scoring his first heat win of the year with Paul Holley second with third going to Davey Shaw.
