Braden Claims Third Win at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (6/24) - It was veteran drivers Sam Heckman and Dick Dunlevy
leading the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models to the green
in their thirty lap feature. Side by side they ran with Brandon Oakley
right behind and then here came previous weeks winner Travis Braden into
fourth followed by Don Mahaffey. Dunlevy did shake loose and held the
number one spot with Oakley on his bumper but Braden took the outside
lane to challenge Dunlevy and Mahaffey tried Oakley. Braden, in search
of his third win took control on lap thirteen with Oakley trailing.
At the halfway marker it was Braden, Oakley, Mahaffey, Dunlevy and
Heckman. Braden made the long haul from Wheeling, West Virginia pay off
as he did claim his third feature in the Gary Estes Weiler
Welding/Quaker Steak & Lube special. Oakley claimed second with Mahaffey
third followed by Dunlevy and Heckamn
Brandon Oakley took advantage of his front starting slot in the late
model fast car dash to take the win over Travis Braden, Don Mahaffey,
and Terry Scherz.
Jamie Sites and Russ Bobb ran side by side until they made contact
coming out of turn four with both spinning, bringing out the caution and
both sent to the rear. It was a break for Bobby Justus who was running
third as he found himself in the lead but unfortunately something broke
on Sites car sending him into a spin and with no place to go Russ Bobb
hit him head on. The event was checkered with the win going to Justus
with Sam Heckman second and Tony Brunke third. With heavy damage to both
the Sites and Bobb machines both were out of further competition.
The four lap sport stock dash has Mike South Jr. and Josh Longstreth
in the front row with a false start resulting in a restart and it was
South taking the lead with second fast timer Travis Digges moving into
second. When the checker waved it was South the winner followed by fast
timer Shawn Stansell and fourth was Longstreth.
Rodney Kreusch and Ricky Young led the pack to the green in the heat
and just as the green waved Young's car shot right into the turn one
wall. Young was ok but his car suffered front end damage. Kreusch took
the lead on the restart with Tyler Mahaffey right behind. Kreusch took
the win over a hard charging Mahaffey who charged so hard at the finish
line that he spun. Third was Brian Cottrill and Richard Roush fourth.
Heat winner Rodney Kreush and Josh Longstreth brought the sport stock
feature field to the green with Longstreth jumpig out to a commanding
lead leaving five cars behind him to battle for position. As the five
battled Travis Digges and Tyler Mahaffey made contact on turn four on
lap seven with Digges hitting the wall vary hard and Mahaffey crashing
right beside him. Unfortunately both cars were pitted with heavy damage
to the right front ends of their cars.
Longstreth was in command on the restart but right behind him was fast
timer and two time feature winner Shawn Stansell who was ready to give
Longstreth a battle for the lead. Longstreth hugged the inside land,
hoping to keep Stansell behind him while back behind them Mike South was
challenging Kreusch for third and did son on lap sixteen. Stansell was
sizing up Longstreth as he looked at the outside lane but the determined
Longstreth shook him off, that is until the white flag flew and Stansell
in his Replacement Auto Parts special stole the win. Longstreth placed a
respectful second with Mike South Jr. third followed by Rodney Kreusch
and Richard Roush
It was thirty laps to go in the modified feature with Jason Mahaffey
ad Bill Burba leading to the green with previous weeks winner Mahaffey
surging ahead with Burba and Ryan Fleming in tow. Not far behind was
Derek Weatherhead and fast timer Mike Carroll. At lap six the caution
flew slowing the pace but on the restart it was the top five running
bumper to bumper. Young Ryan Fleming moved into second on lap twelve
with Mike Carroll into third as Burba slipped back to fifth. Mahaffey
and his Commercial Roofing and Smart Choice Landscaping machine
continued to set the pace as he moved up on slower traffic. Further back
Carroll and Weatherhead battled for third as they wove through traffic.
At the checker it was Mahaffey taking home his third win with Ryan
Fleming second, Mike Carroll third with Derek Weatherhead fourth and
Bill Burba fifth.
Paul Holley jumped into the lead at the start of the compact feature
as second fast timer Matt Stone then took over the front spot with the
caution coming out on lap three when Chris Barrett lost a wheel. Stone,
winner the previous week had fast timer Bo Hoelscher on his bumper on
the restart but Stone took off like a rocket with Hoelscher back a ways.
Battling for third was Gary Williams and Holley with Ron Sagers on the
move. Sagers soon had Bryan Lynch right beside his door as Lynch was on
the move. As the white flag unfolded Hoelscher was right on Stones
bumper with Stone taking his second win of the year. With Hoelscher a
close second Gary Wiliams claimed third with Bryan Lynch fourth and Paul
Holley fifth.
IKO Minicup fast timer Cory Deuser had little trouble in winning their
feature, his first of the season with Jacob McClay second and Amanda
Harrison third.
