Don Mahaffey Claims Second Kil-Kare Win

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (5/20)  - It was another great night of racing at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night which saw Don Mahaffey Jr. claim his second NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature while his brother Jason Mahaffey scored his first modified feature. James McElfresh claimed the compact feature and Mike South Jr his second sport stock feature while the visiting IOFS figure-eight winner was Charlie Hargraves.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models saw two veteran and former drivers on the front row as Sam Heckman and Dick Dunlevy led the field. Dunlevy in his Eddie Simpson owned machine led the forst lap as last years champ Don Mahaffey charged up to callege him, taking the lead only to see Bobby Justus spin on turn four causing a caution and putting Dunlevy back in command.
It was Dunlevy, Mahaffey, Brandon Oakley, Heckman, and fast timer Travis Braden the top five on the restart. Mahaffey shot into the lead leaving Dunlevy to hold off Oakley who stole second on lap six. Fast timer Braden then dropped Dunlevy to fourth as Braden tried to catch the leaders. The caution flew on lap eleven when Tony Brunke, making his first visit of  the season lost a wheel.
Mahaffey, looking for his second feature win of the year in his Oakley Blacktop machine again had control on the restart with teammate Brandon Oakley, a one time winner in second. Braden closed in on Oakley but young Oakley kept shaking him off as the caution appeared again as Shawn Stansell spun coming out of turn four. Behind third p;ace Braden on the restart was Dunlevy and Heckam while right behind him was Ricky Bates abd Chad Pendleton.
Lap eighteen saw the caution again as Justus spun on turn one. Mahaffey again led after the restart but Oakley was dropped to second when Braden slipped under him coming out of turn four with the caution again one lap later when Shawn Stansell spun on turn one. Mahaffey still had command as the laps wound down Braden was trying his best to catch leader Mahaffey but time ran out as Mahaffey claimed his second feature of the young season. Braden was second with Oakley third, Dunlevy fourth and Heckman fifth.
Heading the pack of modifieds in their thirty kap feature was Jason Mahaffey and Ross Klinglehofer as the two ran side by side with Jerry Stapleton nearby along with fast time Derek Weatherhead with action slowed on lap two as John Donovan spun on turn four.
Mahaffey, previous weeks second place finisher had the lead on the restart with Stapleton second and one time feature winners Weatherhead and Ryan Fleming riding third and fourth. Weatherhead was sizing up Stapleton trying to figure a line to make a pass while Mahaffey continued to set the pace.  Lap fourteen saw the caution as Mike Pippin spun coming out of turn four. At the halfway it was Mahaffey, Klinglehofer, Stapleton, Weatherhead, and Fleming.
The battle was for third as Weatherhead went to the outside of Stapleton but Stapleton kept shaking him off. Mahaffey still enjoyed the lead but Klinglehofer was closing the gap each lap as they moved upon slower traffic. It was going to be a charge to the checker as Mahaffey and his Affordable Auto Parts pulled off their first feature win of the year in a close finish with Klinglehofer second and Stapleton a very close third with Weatherhead fourth and Fleming fifth.
The IOFS series figure-eight cars were led to the green by Chuckie Hargraves and Jeff Hizer for their fifty lap feature on the tight figure-eight course. Hizer took the lead with Charlie Hargraves into second wit Chuckie Hargraves in third and Josh Tharp fourth but Hargraves made contact at the intersection and slipped back as they battled through the intersection.
The caution flew on lap thirteen when the top two top runner Josh Tharp and Jeff Hizer tangled resulting in a red flag to remove the tangled cars. Charlie Hargraves jumped into the lead and survided a contact with Chuckie Hargraves as the pace was slowed by debris on the track and when the green flew Charlie set sail again John Lord and Chuckie Hargraves third. When the checker waved it was Indianapolis driver Charlie Hargraves taking the win, lapping the whole field in the process, Second was Rod Phipps and third was Chuckie Hargraves. Claiming fourth was Jeff Swinford and fifth was Johnny Hargraves.
The compacts were led to the green by Gary Williams and Steve Salyers only to see Williams a little anxious, jumping the start resulting in a second attempt to get them underway. Williams in his Affordable Auto Parts took the lead and was hard charging into turn for when he spun in front of the field forcing a restart. Unfortunately for fifth fast timer Williams he was knocked out of competion.
This now put James McElfresh on the pole along with Salyers for the restart which saw the yellow again as Ron Sagers spun on turn two. Again the green flew McElfresh had the lead but here came new track record holder Matt Stone into second as two time winner Bo Hoelscher was on the move. Stone made an outside pass on lap five to take the lead with McElfresh still second with Salyers riding third and Hoelscher, smolog in fourth.
Hoelscher did drop out as Stone continued to set the pace and then Salyers dropped out leaving Stone, McElfresh, Bryan Lynch, Paul Holly and Todd Tervene the top five. When the checker waved it was James McElfresh snatching the lead coming out of turn four for the win barely beating Stone who was second. Lynch, Holly and Tervene completed the top five.
Richard Roush and first night winner Mike South Jr. brought the fifteen car sport stock feature to the green with Roush out front of a tight pack as the cars ran side by side. Phil Gussler Jr. slid inside of South as they fought for second  with fast timer Ross Klinglehofer a close fourth with Shawn Stansell right behind. South came on strong to take the lead on lap seven with Klinglehofer in third as the caution flew when Ricky Young spun on turn two.
Just after the green flew on the restart Tyler Mahaffey spun and again on the green it was South still in command but behind him was a great battle with Roush claiming second and here came Stansell ro slip inside Klinglehofer  for third and Travis Digges dropping Klinglehofer back a spot. Stansell was coming on strong in his Moore's Trucking special to close in on South when the caution flew on lap seventeen when Klinglehofer stopped on turn four.
Due to a fire in the electrial wires behind the grandstand te race was called complete on lap seventeen with South declared the winner with Shawn Stansell second, Richard Roush third, Phil Gussler Jr. fourth and Josh Longstreth fifth.
