Dunlevy Claims First Kil-Kare Win

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - It was a pleasing night for the young race fans Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway with the race car rides around the oval. It was also pleasing to Dick Dunlevy Jr, Matt Stone, Ryan Fleming and Shawn Stansell as they all won features in their respective divisions.
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature had Russ Bobb and Terry Scherz in the front row. Veteran Bobb had the lead with dash winner Tony Brunke passing him on lap two with Bob Sibilia taking second and Don Mahaffey in third. Sibila went to the outside to take control on lap five and here came fast timer Travis Braden slipping into third but Mahaffey bounced back and took second as Braden slid back to fifth. Dick Dunlevy took third as Braden then moved up on him as he tried for third. Action was slowed on lap ten when Brandon Oakley and Russ Bobb tangled on the frontstretch with Oakley departing to the pits.
With Sibila in control Mahaffey then sized him up trying to make a pass  as Dunlevy held off Braden. The top four were running bumper to bumper when Scherz made contact with Russ Bobb who spun and Scherz to the tail. Sibilia, who almost won the Robbie Dean 94 a few weeks earlier was looking for his first feature win but a hungry Don Mahaffey was hounding him, in fact so much that he made contact with Sibila with Sibila spinning on turn two and Mahaffey to the tail.
Fourteen laps of pressure remained with Dick Dunlevy now on Sibila's rear and Braden within striking distance. The last few laps were humdingers as Dunlevy and Sibila battled door to door for the lead with Dunlevy finally taking the lead with Braden moving into second but it was the veteran driver Dick Dunlevy in the Eddie Simpson owned machine taking their first feature win of the year. Braden was a close second with Sibila third. Don Mahaffey and Terry Scherz rounded out the top five.
The late model first fast car dash saw Bob Sibila and Dick Dunlevy in the front row with Sibilia taking the lead with Dunlevy riding alongside. Sibilia hung on to take the win with Dunlevy second, Don Mahaffey third and fast timer Branden Braden fourth.
The second dash had Russ Bobb and Terry Scherz in the front row with Bobb taking the lead  but here came Tony Brunke to take the lead and win with Bobb second followed by Scherz and Brandon Oakley.
It was thirty laps of modified feature racing with  Rob Dutra and Grant Gamble in the front row. Gamble took the lead with Derek Barnett trying to move up but unfortunately spun on turn four to bring out the caution. Barnett then took the lead on lap three with Ryan Fleming riding second and Derek Weatherhead third. Jerry Stapleton was riding fourth with Jason Mahaffey fifth. Meanwhile Feming was closing in on Barnett with Weatherhead right behind. Fast timer Greg Stapleton passed his uncle Jerry for fourth but lady luck frowned on leader Barnett as he hit the frontstretch wall and was out of contention.
Now one time feature winner Ryan Fleming was in the lead with Weatherhead right behind when the green unfoiled. Again Greg Stapleton battled Jerry and at the halfway it was Fleming, Weatherhead, Greg Stapleton, Jerry Stapleton and Bill Burba. Weatherhead tried to move to the outside of Fleming as Greg Stapleton dove under Weatherhead as they ran wheeel to wheel. Again, with eight laps to go Grant Gamble spun on the frontstretch slowing the field. As the laps wound down Fleming kept his cool as he was seeking his second win of the year and he did in the Dayton Water sponsored machine. Derek Weatherhead was second and Greg Stapleton third. Fourth was Bill Burba and fifth was Jerry Stapleton.
Flying Ryan Fleming and Bill Burba sat on the front row of the modified dash with Feming getting the jump as Burba, fast timer Greg Stapleton and Derek Weatherhead followed. Fleming took the win and the others trailed in that order.
It was Rob Dutra and Grant Gamble in the front row of the modified heat  Dutra took the lead with Jerry Staplweton in second but here came Derek Barnett to move on the outside as he tried to catch Stapleton. Side by side they ran and when they hit the finish line Stapleton won by a big whisker with Barnett second followed by Grant Gamble and Jason Mahaffey.
Ricky Young and Josh Longstreth sat in the front row of the twenty-five lap sport stock feature with Young out front but it was Courtney Hannah taking the front spot with Jeff Marsh right behind. Jamie Sites was on the move on the outside with Travis Digges right along with him. Action was brought to a halt on lap four when Josh Longstreth and Ray Muncy crashed hard. Both cars were heavily damaged and eliminated.
Hannah continued to set sail on the restart and Digges passed Marsh for second and then the caution flew on lap nine when Tyler Mahaffey spun. Hannah had the pressure on her as Digges was didding, trying to see if Hannah would go wide so he make a pass. Then here came Shawn Stansell on the outside  passing Hannah for the lead as Hannah held on to second, Digges third, Marsh fourth and Sites fifth at the halfway mark.
Stansell began to run away from the pack and Tyler Mahaffey was working on the traffic. passing Sites and Marsh to move into fourth. Stansell claimed the win in his Affordable Auto Parts special for the sixth time this year. Rookie Courtney Hannah did a super job to claim runner-up with Travis Digges third. Tyler Mahaffey was fourth and Jamie Sites fifth.
In the sport stock dash it was Ray Muncy and Tyler Mahaffey in the front row with Muncy taking charge with Mahaffey on the outside and Shawn Stansell slipping by for second. Fast timer Travis Digges then displaced Mahaffey for third  as Muncy took the checker for his first dash win followed by Stansell, Digges, and Mahaffey.
The sport stock heat had Ricky Young and Duane Bohrer in front for their eight lap event. Young was too eager on the start as he jumped the field making for another attempt to get it under way. Young took command when the green waved but Bohrer was giving him fits with Josh Longstreth and Courtney Hannah right behind. Lap four changed things as Longstreth took over with Bill Ramey second and Jamie Sites in third. At the checker Longstreth took the win by a small magin with Sites second, Ramey third, and Courtney Hannah fourth.
The compacts faced twenty laps in thier feature with Ryan Barrett and heat winner Steve Barnhart in the front row and when they hit the green Barnhart took the lead with Ron Sagers in second and Davey Shaw third. Sagers took the outside lane to take the lead only to see the caution on lap two when Paul Holley spun on turn four. Reverting back to the last completed lap put Barnhart back in front. Barnhart set the pace but fast timer Matt Stone was on the move as he weeded his way to the lead on lap four. Many time winner Bo Hoelscher got boxed in behind Barnhart and Sagers but once he got free he set sail of leader Stone. Back in the pack Joe Hoelscher was working his way up, taking fourth and then went after Sagers. Gary Williams was coming from deep in the field to move into fifth by lap fourteen. Stone and Hoelscher worked around traffic  as they lapped car after car. Stone claimied his fifth feature win of the year in his Valley Auto Parts special. Nine time winner Bo Hoelscher was not far behind in second with Joe Hoelscher taking third. Ron Sagers and Gary Williams rounded out the top five.
Carroll Nease and Paul Holly led the compact heat to the green. Nease took the lead as the cars went three wide with Gary Williams in second but that didn't last long as fast timer Matt Stone whizzed by Williams and then took the lead from Nease. Bo Hoelscher was closing in on Stone but it was Stone the winner with Hoelscher second and Nease third with Joe Hoelscher fourth.
Ryan Barrett and Steve Barnhart led the pack in the second heat with Barnhart taking the lead with Ron Sagers taking second and Davey Shaw third. Sagers went to the high side and passed Barnhart for the lead with Nick Barnett moving into third. Unfortunately Sagers broke out on his time and was sent to the tail giving Barnhart back the lead. Barnhart went on to claim his first  heat win of the year with Nick Barrett second followed by Davey Shaw and Ivin Fugate.
